Vynova has completed a major investment at its VCM plant in Tessenderlo (Belgium), replacing the refrigeration units of both VCM production facilities with state-of-the-art, more environmentally friendly refrigeration installations. The project was carried out over a period of 3 years and represents a total investment of 18.5 million euros.

VCM, short for vinyl chloride monomer, is one of the basic chemicals that Vynova produces in Tessenderlo. VCM is an essential intermediate for the production of PVC, a versatile polymer that is mainly used in building and construction (for example for window profiles, flooring, pipes and electrical cables) and in medical devices such as blood bags and medical tubing.

As part of the VCM production process, large refrigeration units are used to condensate vapours. In order to minimize the environmental impact of this set-up, the old refrigeration installations were replaced by new units that use propane as refrigerant, significantly improving the environmental footprint of the Tessenderlo VCM operations. The project was executed according to a phased approach and ran from 2019 to 2022.

“The new refrigeration units are part of a major investment programme in new technologies to make our plants even more sustainable and efficient. Since 2016, we have already invested over 200 million euros at our Tessenderlo site as part of that programme,” concludes Dimitri Wouters, Site Manager of Vynova Belgium.
